MARTON NOTES.

ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATION. The Town Hall was crowded on Monday afternoon on the occasion of the Commemoration Service of all : who fell in the great war. The Mayor, Mr William C. Kensington, presided, ' and was supported by the ministers.'; The Marton Band rendered splendid s service in providing the musical pro- i gramme, their selections being Chop- ' in’s “Funeral March” and “The Dead > March” (Handel), and also led the ' singing in the hymns “O God our i help in ages past,” “God of our Fath- : ers” and “Lead Kindly Light.” A reading from the Bible, prayers and an address by the Rev. H. T. Peat, C.F., were interspersed with the, 1 hymns, and at the conclusion Bandsman F. Lound sounded “The Last Post” very sweetly. Mr H. Sherriff's singing of "Some Sweet Day” (Fanny Crossby) added to the impressiveness of the service, which was carried out in a manner befitting the occasion. MARTON BOROUGH ELECTION. Mr F. Holder inserts an advertisement in reference to his candidature for the municipal elections. SCHOOL COMMITTEES. MARTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL The largest meeting of householders in the history of Marton was held on j Monday evening, Mr T. Low presiding over some 200 people. The secretary and treasurer (Mr E. Hutchins) in his statement referred to the financial position of the committee’s working during the year. The credit balance at Ist March, 1920, was £9 3-4, and this year £1 3/8, with a subsidy outstanding by the Government of £44, being £37 for gas and £7 for improvements to the grounds. During the past year the school roll of honour was unveiled by the Minister of Education. The tablet (which is undoubtedly one of the best school memorials in the Dominion), was erected at a cost of £ll6 5/, which had been paid for by voluntary subscriptions, and was also a fitting memorial to the work of their late chairman (Mr J. J. McDonald). £lOO has also been sent to the Education Department for an additional class-room at the High School. With the £lOO previously forwarded and the subsidy of £2OO a substantial room is expected to be erected shortly. Gas has also been installed throughout the school and proved a great boon during the last winter, for lighting and providing hot water for children’s lunches. The preparations for the visit of the Prince of Wales to the school were organised by the school committee and proved a great social success, all the neighbouring schools taking part in the demonstration.

The chairman also read a report on the year’s working. The headmaster’s report on the work of the school during his short period of control stressed the need for three more schoolrooms.

Mr F. Purnell paid a compliment to the outgoing committee and referred in feeling terms to the work of the late Mr J. .1. McDonald, for many years chairman. He also referred to t’he splendid services rendered by Mr and Mrs E. Hutchins. Appreciation of the work of Mr Hutchins as secretary during the past seven years was recorded. Mr Hutchins did not seek re-election owing to ill-health. It was decided to enter an emphatic protest against the negligence of the Education Board in not providing adequate accommodation for the eseondary department at the Marton District High School.

The following committee was elected: —Messrs T. Low (chairman), R. B. Kilgour, J. D. Gome, E. Fletcher, W. B. Whitcombe, A. C. Stevens (secretary and treasurer), A. Gracey, R. T. Morris and Rev. Peat. FALLEN SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL. CONSECRATION AND UNVEILING AT BULLS.
