THE MAYORAL CONTEST.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—I must apologise for again rushing into print, but since my letter under the above heading appeared in your issue of the 20th inst. I have been asked to explain what proposal I intend to place before the future Mayor of Wanganui With your permission, I will reply as briefly as possible. During my second visit to London In 1905 in connection with the development of the Northern Territory, Mr. Streetier, the Bond

Street jeweller, and mining magnate, after offering to be a co-director with Lord Kintore and myself, suggested that he should give me a letter of introduction to a rising young solicitor who had just recently taken the highest possible honours in the United Kingdom, who would put me through an examination as to whether my proposed method of organisation and finance was sound, viewed from every aspect. After submitting to a verbal shower-bath for nearly two hours, to my surprise my forensic mentor complimented me on the idea, and told me he could confidently recommend Mr. Streeter to invest his money when opportunity offered. The time has at last arrived, after waiting patiently for nearly 20 years, and I am prepared to divulge to Mr. T. B. Williams within four walls, whether he is elected to the Mayoral chair or otherwise, the same idea with another 15 years deep thought and experience on the top of it. In selecting Mr. Williams as Father Confessor I am fortified by the fact that he has upheld the dignity of Wanganui after the late civic contretemps in such a manner that he has inspired confidence in everyone who is possessed with a higher feeling. If this new departure in finance is adopted every Borough Council in the Dominion, every farmer who has stock, wool, meat, or land held under mortgage will be able to breathe again, and all trusts operating in the Southern Hemisphere will be labelled “Not wanted on the voyage.”—l am, etc., JOSEPH CARWARDINE.
