SENSATION AT LYTTLETON.

THREE MEN ARRESTED THREAT TO READ THE RIOT ACT. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 11. A serious affray at Lyttelton last evening resulted in the arrest of three men. jhe police had arrested a seaman for using obscene language and were then attacked by a large crowd, consisting mainly ot seamen and firemen. Ina struggle lasting over half an hour two constables were badly knocked about, and the police were compelled to make free use of their batons ill fighting their way to the police station. A threat to read the Riot Act caused tho crowd to disperse. THE SEQUEL. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 11. The sequel to the disturbance at Lyttelton last night took place at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when five firemen on the. steamer Maimoa were charged before Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M., with various offences arising therefrom. Richard Jones was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment on a charge of using obscene language, and convicted and discharged on a charge of resisting arrest and ordered to pay expenses. George Henry Crowe was sentenced to one months’ imprisonment lor obstructing a constable, and convicted on a charge of using obscene language. James Hastley was fined £lO for using obscene language, in default one month’s imprisonment. Albert Beardsley and John Philbin were each fined £lO for inciting lawlessness, in default one month’s “ prisonmen t.
