TOTE PERMITS.

COMMISSION OPENS INQUIRY. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. A meeting of the commission appointed to make recommendations as to the number and distribution of totalisator permits next racing season was held in Wellington to-day, Mr. Fred Earl, K.C., presiding. Returns of the different clubs regarding their applications for permits were presented by the secretary. It was resolved that in each of the four principal centres two or three speakers be heard on the general question of the issue of additional permits, and that upon such occasions the proceedings of the Commission be open to the Press. The Commission has agreed upon its itinerary of Wellington and Hawke’s Bay districts, and will leave Wellington to-morrow morning for Featherston and Masterton. It will return to the city on 19th January via Manawatu.
