SUPPRESSION OF GAMBLING.
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 9. The police have been active on the waterfront breaking up hazard and crown and anchor schools. Cornelius Murphy, found playing the latter game on the wharves and steamer Kaikoura, was fined £2O, the magistrate intimating he would impose a much heavier fine on the next offender. The police have been particularly active of late ridding the waterfront of m a ny undesirable characters.
