DEPARTMENTAL ECONOMY.

PRIME MINISTER’S WARNING. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 7. The following memorandum emphasising the great need for economy in Departmental expenditure has been forwarded by the Prime Minister to heads of State Departments; "I shall be glad if you will direct heads of Departments under your control that Departmental expenditure must be reduced as much as possible, having due regard to efficiency. Departmental heads should be instructed before committing the State to any abnormal expenditure to first ascertain from the Treasury that cash can be provided without undue cost. It should also be noted that the financial position in London is such that caution should be observed when placing orders beyond New Zealand, as until the balance of trade is,restored it may prove di|icuit to provide money In London without the payment of a high rate of exchange.”
