FAISONS MAKE MOST PALS

A clergyman has a bigger circle of friends than'has any other dweller in his parish. We view the bulk of those with whom we come in contact much as we gaze upon pictures. We tick them off in our minds according to their most striking characteristics. Thus, Mr Jones to us is a “fat” man; Mr. Neal “red-haired”; Mr. Budd a “swank.” Similarly, Mrs. Fay is “loud”; Miss Newt “stylish”; and Miss Grove “religious.” They are all familiar strangers. But a parson doesn’t regard his flock as being distinctive from each other only in hair, dress or mannerisms. He knows them by their smiles! Moreover, their attitude to him is different from their attitude towards each other. They show him their better side. Grim visages relax at his approach, dull faces brighten; haughty eyes become friendly and kind. But. more l important—as a social worker he knows the sterling qualities of which many cold and unprepossessing countenances show no. outward and visible sign. Apart, therefore, from the pleasure of social intercourse enjoyed by a man who i- popular with all men and women, the parson' has the unique privilege of counting among his “nicest” friends that class of “dour” persons who do good by stealth, but who unfortunately lack that urbanity land charm of manner which would win them the esteem of all.
