OXOIA FARMERS’ UNION.

MONTIJLI MULLING. The monthly meeting of the Okoia j branch of the Farmers’ Union was i held in the Okoia Hall on Tuesday’ i evening last, when the following j were present: Messrs A. D. Macln- | tosh (chairman), A. N. McLeod. .Li Higgie, S’. Strachan, J. Oaird, D. Me- j Gregor, W. H. Brook, AV- Neilson, R. | Sominerviije, and D. Strachan. MOTOR CAR INSURANCE. j A letter to the Wanganui secre- I lary from the Wellington Farmers’ I Mutual Fire Insurance Association i was read, .stating that under certain; sections of the Mutual Fire Insurance Act. the association were not. permitted to cover motor ears. Mr Somraerville said that although the Association in the Wellington district did not insure motor cars, in the Taranaki district they did. It seemed a very strange thing. Mr Higgie understood that the two districts were like two different, j companies, with different.rules gov-! erning each. The letter was received. ARMOUR'S EXPORT LICENSE. A letter to the sub-provincial secretary from the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. W- Nosworthy) was read, seating that in connection with the proposal to issue an export license to Messrs Armour and Co., the legal aspect of f.o.b. and c.i.f. pur- | chases was being gone into, in order i that t.he whole position might be j judged to the best advantage. , The chairman said that he under- , stood that the question of granting i an export license, to Armour’s had | been considered by the Government I and turned down. The letter was received. RURAL MAILS. The Wanganui secretary in a let- j ter to branches gave a great deal of information in regard to rural mail deliveries. The Chief Postmaster and senior clerk in Wanganui had been approached, and they had furnished particulars. Motor cars were apparently’ the chief reason for the falling oft of backblock deliveries. Settlers who owned cars, not only carried their own mails to the big centres, but took their neighbours’ ■letters as well, thus cutting out. the country post offices, and piling double the work on to the offices in the towns. Mr Sommerville said he thought that when the next tender fell due. the settlers in this district, would have to subsidise a delivery. Mr Caird was of the opinion that if Okoia had a daily delivery, more letters would be collected by the Department. as settlers would nod. post their in town, but would rely on it being collected from their gates. Mr Higgie said that settlers in the back country’ should get their mails as often as possible* and if the Department could possibly’ arrange deliveries free of subsidy’ they should do so. Mr McLeod said that many mail contracts were at present being run at a loss. The letter was received. ROUND TABLE CONFERENCE. Maxwelltown branch in a remit, urged that, the round-table conference of all branches of Labour, and Farmers’ Union, and employers of labour, as adopted by the Farmers’ Conference held at Feilding this year, be furthered without delay. Mr Sommerville said that at the Farmers’ Conference at Feilding, the matter had arisen as the outcome of a speech by a member of the Welfare League. It seemed a very good idea, and the only difficulty to be encountered, would be that in. all probability, the true representatives of Labour would not be presentThe chairman said that the farmers had no quarrel wiih Labour. Mr Higgie said that no harm would dome through the holding of a conference. He would support the remit. Mr McGregor said that he was against the remit. In his opinion no good would be done as the outcome of a conference. After some further discussion, a motion by Mr Sommerville in support of the remit was carried on the voices. BALANCE-SHEET. The. sub-provincial, executive forwarded their balance-sheet for the period ended September 30th. On that date a credit, balance at the bank of £503 ;5/5 was shown. Members expressed their satisfaction at the position disclosed, and a motion that the balance-sheet be received was carried.
