THE SYDNEY HANDICAP. Received August 1, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, August 1. The Sydney Handicap, one mile and a half, on the Paramatta, was I rowed on Saturday. The weather was fine and the water good. The attendance was large. First heat.—R. Short (lOsecs.) 1, Felton (scratch) 2, G. Matterson (17 secs.) 3. Felton, in great form, gradually cut down Short’s start, but towards the finish appeared content with second place. Second heat. —Matterson (55secs.) 1, Barry (scr.) 2, Kent (15secs.) 3. Barry, with a fine sweeping stroke, like a well-oiled machine, crept steadily into second place, with which, like Felton, he appeared content, and finished three lengths behind Matterson.’ Third heat.-—George Towns (45 secs.) 1, West (20secs.) 2, McDevitt (3secs.) 3. The old ex-champion led all the way and won by half a length. Fourth heat.—Cowell (40secs.) 1, T. Price (30secs.) 2, Peterson (20 secs.) 3. Dick Arnst (6secs.) 4. Won by a length. Arnst showed to great advantage in the early stages, but had to be content with fourth place. All second placers qualified for the final next Saturday.
