PROFITEERING IN WOOL.
DENOUNCED BY AN M.P. (Reuter.) ‘ LONDON. Jan. 26. Mr Mackinder, a member of the House of Commons, speaking at Bradford, denounced the profiteering in wool. He declared that the Government made over sixteen million sterling profits on wool last year. Mr Mackinder added that the Government paid Australia and New Zealand 64 4 millions for wool, which when auctioned fetched 100 per cent, above the prices for the previous 12 months. Yet the Government paid no more. Since March the Government had sold 1,450,000 bales. Mr Mackinder instanced one firm’s profits, which averaged £B5OO before the war, while the profit last year was £37,900.
