Mr W. Hardham, V.C., has been appointed manager of the Welling, ton Returned Soldiers’ Club, vice Mr W, J. Callender, who is about to go on the land.

A Sydney cable states that the Hon. David Storey has resigned from the N.S.W. Ministry of Health, and is retiring from active politics. He is to be appointed to the Legislative Council. At the nurserymen’s co.ference at Wellington on Wednesday a vote of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mr Alex. Laird, of Wanganui, and the late Mr Henry Newport, of Levin, was carried unanimously. Sympathy J was also expressed with Mr and Mrs J. Robinson, of Dunedin, in the loss of their eldest son, and with Mr T. Waugh and his family in the death of their son. who was killed in an accident at Trentliam. The motions were passed in silence, all standing. The congratulations of their many friends were yesterday given to Mr and Mrs J. O. Batchelar, two of the oldest settlers in the Manawatu district, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage, which took place in Wellington on January 29, 1870. Mr Batchelar was London-born, and came out to New Zealand as a young man on the Black Swan in 1866. Mrs Batchelar, whose maiden name was Miss Elizabeth Davidson, was a Melbourne girl. Mr Batchelar followed several occupations in the pioneer days, both in Wanganui and Palmerston North before settling down to farm his presen property, a few miles out of I vlmerston, about 40 years ago. H'S is a veteran of the Maori war. The happy couple have had the honour of raising a large family of eleven children—fkve daughters and six so’'s. The (laughters are Mrs Laurer.so.i (Wellington), Mrs Jenkins (Masterton), Mrs Bennett (Auckland), Mrs Sammin (Palmerston North), and Miss M. Batchelar. The sons followed in their father’s footsteps, and the three single cues served with distinction in the later war. The sens are—Messrs Jas Batchelar (Linton), J. W. Batchelar (Walt’i”a V. est), Colonel A. F. Batchelar (Palmerston North), Lieut. H. D. I’atchelar (Palmerston Nnrth), Mr R. A. Batchelar, and Major D. E. Batchelar (Utiwai).
