BRITISH OIL ENGINE PIONEERS.
British engineers were leaders in tl.e development of the high compression or self-igniting oil engine, which lies between the Diesel and the Semi-Diesel types. Instead of the usual air injection system/ high pressure of the fuel alone is used to inject the liquid in a sufficiently finely divided state for perfect combustion. Compression pressures lower than those required with ajr injection can therefore be employed. Engines designed on this principle can be started from cold with almost any oil of the petroleum series. In one British engine of 117 horse power designed in tliis wa. the fuel consumption reached the remarkably low figure of 0.5 lb. per brake horse-power per hour ■ ith half load to a considerable overload. With special adjustments to suit residual petroleum, the figure fell to 0-40 lb. at full load.
