ENGINEER'S REPORT

The County Engineer, Mr T. Dix, in the course of his report, drew attention to Ibe urgency of remetalHng several roads.

Dealing with the work in several ridings, the engineer stated: —

Brunswick. —A fair amount of patching with the best materials available had been carried out, but great difficulty has been experienced in ( keeping the roads from breaking up. A start had been made with the metalling of portion of the deviation on the Tokomaru East Road. Fifty-eight chair.s of engineering survey had been completed on the Missing Link Road. The I.angaiti Bridge site, which has been approved by the resident engineer, is not within the road reserve, and a survey is required to legalise the land taken for the new bridge site.

Westmere. —Work in this riding was proceeding steadily and attention had been paid to the maintenance of roads throughout the riding.

Waitotara.—-The roads generally were in fair order. Plans had been prepared for a reinforced concrete bridge at the Okehu stream on the Kandley Road. It was uroposed to erect a girder structure having a clear span of 50 ft., the abutments being on the cantilever principle. Several culverts were required on the main ror.d between Kai Iwi and Maxwelltown. A sharp point near the top of the hill on the Pukerimu Road might be greatly improved by reforming about four chains of road.

Tokomaru—The roads throughout this riding are in a good state of repair. Good progress was- being made for metalling Tokomaru West Road. The widening and improving of 80 chains of bridle track on the Watershed Road has been satisfactorily completed, and a further length of 100 chains has been let. The work of! widening, cujv-jerting, and regrading 100 chains of the Watershed Road, north of Messrs Chapman and Son's homestead, has I ;en satisfactorily completed.
