ST. MARY'S CONVENT GARDEN PARTY.
In spite of the uncertain weather, a fair number attended the garden fete which was held at the Alexander Estate on Saturday afternoon. The proceeds of the function are being directed towards the furnishing of a Convent stall at the bazaar which is to be held next February. Among those present on Saturday were Mr and Mrs Mackay and Mr and Mrs Veitch, also the students of St. John's Hill Convent. Mr Veitch addressed the gathering, expressing his pleasure at being present and complimenting those responsible for. the excellent manner in which arrangements were made. He reminded the pupils of the importance of education, and tendered a few well chosen words of advice. Before declaring the function open, Mr Veitch reminded the children that they were there to enjoy themselves, and their parents to buy of the stalls set aside for them. A large Christmas tree, well laden with mysterious parcels, claimed the attention of the younger people, while their parents were directed towards four stalls bearing an attractive collection of fancy goods, cakes» produce and sweets. Very few things were left by nightfall, the sweets, especially, disappearing at an incredible rate. During the afternoon enjoyable selections were played, by the Wanganui Garrison Band, and a concert was held in a large marquee in the grounds. The students of the St. John's Hill Convent also gave an excellent display of physical drill. Great excitement ensued with the appearance of a live Father Christmas, and at the close of the fete all present voted the function a highly successful one.
