UREN DEFEATS HEENEY.

A ONE-SIDED CONTEST

A big event in the local boxing world was staged in the Town Hall last evening in the shape of a professional contest between Tommy Uren, middle and welterweight champion of Australia, and Jack Heeney, of New Zealand, a middle-weight (says thj Dominion). The hall, stage, and ringside were packed with an audience which throughout the evening gave evidence of both good (humour and patiencje, and not a single discordant note of partisanship could be detected. Uren took the ring at lOst 5y 2 lb, and Heeney at list 21b, but never was the Australian's superiority in doubt. He is built on remarkably clean lines, keen faced and lithe, and in the matter of footwork was wonderfully active. Uren operated with coolness :.nd speed, and was never really extended. His victory was a foregone conclusion, and the only wonder was that his opponent lasted out till the ninth round. The boxing was practially all confined to close quarters, infighting being the order of the evening. The audience were never swept off their feet with enthusiasm, for the simple reason that the contest was devoid of any open work and high strung rallies. It was too onesided. The Australian's clean boxing was the subject of favourable comment on all sides, as was also the New Zealander's ability to take the punishment which naturally came his way. Uren gave taste of much clever work in evasion, as well as attack, but the combat was waged close up us a rul£. Uren repeatedly ntched jabs and hooks on the New Zealander's body, and some of his punches were weighty. There was not that snap to Heeney's movements that was so conspicuous in all the Australian's work, and his advantage in weight and muscle "cut no ice" against the finished exhibition of his opponent. With the certainty of victory in sight, Uren seldom forced matters, and then only for a s-jcon.i or two. He conceded to Heeney every courtesy and was scrupulous in not exacting unnecessary punishment. j
