ALLEGED INFANTICIDE.

ASHBURTON, December 5

The police received advice yesterday evening that the body of a newly-born male infant had been found at the residence of J. Bishop, at Tinwald, between the copper and the wall of the wash house. The body was removed to the morgue, where a post-mortem examination was held this morning.

This afternoon an inquest was held before Mr, J, Gow, district coroner. Dr. T. Pettey deposed that the child had been alive, and death was due io strangulation with a piece of tape, which he produced. Subsequently fie examined a girl named Catherine Small, who admitted she was the mother of the child.

The inquest was adjourned for a week, the coroner intimating that criminal proceedings would follow.
