HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S EXHIBITION.

FINE DISPLAY OF BLOOMS

Tlie Wanganui Horticultural Socfetv's res->. carnation and sweet pea show was held at the Drill Hall yesterday. The wil.l weather of late affected exhibits, but nevertheless a very fine display of flowers was made. With the well filled and tastefully arranged tables the scene was a particularly pleasing one and throughout the afternoon and evening there was a.large attendance of visitors.

Exhibits of conspicuous merit were made b~ Mr F. Mason (Feiklmg) and Mr E. S Rasmussen and Mrs Wallace, of Wanganui. - There were many fine exhibits or produce an! home industries, the Queen's Park School put in a. comprehensive exhibit of flora. *an,3 photographs of the cottage gardens in the recent competition wen? on view.

Last evening musical items were played by the Garrison Band and Moore's orchestra.

Two exhibits which took a lot of attention were a large bunch of asparagus fern and a leaf of gumiera manicata. Tin's latter plant is a native of South America, and the leaf is eight feet in width.

AH the officials of the Society worked hard to ensure success, the joint hon. secretaries, Mrs E. H. Suisted and Mr J. Robertson having a busy time. The judges were : — Carnations —Mr Rasmtissen. Sweet peas and cut flowers —Mr C. Goodson. Roses —Mr F. Mason. Decorative —Miss K,ollv. Vegetables—Mr- W. T. Bencfield, senr. Home Industries—Mrs Webb-Jones. PRESIDENT'S REMARKS. Tn decia ring the show open, the president (M-.W. J. 'freadwell) said the Society had two definite1 aims, to make the shoTv tlte first in the Dominion, and to' prooure a building of their own. Their br.lb hliow was-a success, and they were indebted to Archdeacon Reeve and the chuwli authorities for the uss or iheir building. With the- present show and the present building the exhibits were displayed to better advantage.
