DR. BARNARDO'S HOMES.
Captain Arthur Allen, elocutionist, who did good work on behalf of the war funds, is now out to assist the Young Helpers' League of Dr. Barnardo's Homes. He is advertised for three local rectitals, in halls as ] notified, commencing with a recital in the Assembly Hall of the Girls College on Monday evening next. A contemporary says:—"The hall was well filled by an appreciative audience to hear Captain Allen in his wonderful monologue entertainment. Captain Allen has. with splendid patriotism, decided to use his great dramatic gifts as an elocutionist to help the war funds. The evening provided one of the very best entertainments ever given here. With his wonderful gift the captain had his audience sometimes with tears in their eyes, and at another time roars of laughter greeted his effort. Indeed, he can play on the feelings at will, and his rendering of 'The Day' (by request) was superb and well worth the admission fee alone. When he took his audience to far away Gallipoli- shores, where so many of our 'white flowers only just in bloom' were plucked, and where white bones now lie bleaching, tears were in many eyes. Then again, his wonderful humour set his audience laughing heartily in his humorous .efforts. The whole entertinment was very much appreciated, as was evidenced by the response of the audience, and the results were most gratifying."
