MR McILVRIDE'S CANDIDATURE.

Mr Mcllvride, the official Labour candidate, addressed a fair number of workers at the wharf yesterday morning, and was well received. He spoke on various planks of the Labour platform on the lines of previous speeches, and claimed that the N.Z. Labour Party was the, only real opposition in New Zealand's political fight to-day. He stressed the necessity of the introduction of the initiative, the referendum, and the recall, with proportional representation as the basis of a true democracy. Be opposed Sir Joseph Ward's scheme for the institution of a State bank, • which would saddle the people of New Zealand with increased taxation. The State bank as advocated by the Labour Party would be controlled solely in the interests of the people, all profits going to the State, instead of paying tribute to the financiers who run the money market to-day. Mr Mcllvride was asked a few questions at the close of his address, all of which he answered to the satisfaction of the gathering. A vote of thanks bsing seconded, an amendment that Mr Mcllvride be accor.ded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence was proposed and put to the meeting, and carried unanimously". Mr Mcllvride addressed the workers at the Spiral Pipe Works in the dinner hour yesterday, and received an attentive hearing. In the*short time at the men's disposal he dealt on general lines with his platform and the cost of living problem. He denied the existence of an alliance with Rvform, clearly stating that Labour had no faith in either Liberal or Reform, and chose to stand entirely on its own. No time was left for a vote of thanks after a few questions were answered, but tho men's attitude was decidedly goodnatured and friendly towards the speaker.
