Commenting on Patterson's defeat of Brookes, critics refer to his paralysing pace; his unbridled hitting by a succession of smashing strokes, the compelling force of which completely smothered opposition with the exception of the second set, when Brookes showed a glimpse of his 1914 form and proved himself a supreme genius of tactical ingenuity and all that makes for artistry in tennis.
