RIOTS AT GREYMOUTH.
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 22. Information has been received of disorderly proceedings at Greymouth on Monday evening, wh-~. it is stated the Methodist School was seriously damaged and several persons injured as the result of an atack with stones &nd other missiles by a hostile crowd in the street. A meeting of the Protestant Political Association w . being veld in the hall at the time, among those present being the Rev.' Howard Elliott. Official information yoes to show that about 500 assembled in Chappel Street, outside the Methodist Hall. Stones were thrown at the windows of the building, 30 panes being broken, and two or thr^e persons inside the hall < •were struck by stones, but ; oneseri- j ously hurt. Beyond the stonethrowing there was no disturbance of any moment.- All the available police wers present, and these did everything in their power to enforce order. Some of the stones were thrown from the roof of a house in the vicinity of the hall, but as* the street was badly lighed the police could not identify the offenders. It is stated that there was a feeling of hostility to the, Rev. Howard Elliott, and that the police found it necessary, to afford him protection until he left for Christchurch on Tuesday mcrning.
