NOTES AND COMMENTS

i TO-DAY'S RUNNEJtS REVIEWED

(By "Early Bird.")

Acceptances for to-day are much '. . better all round than on Thursday, but the big hurdle event has only drawn five prospective runners.

The Winter Oats has attracted ," nine. Silver Link ran a fair race on Thursday, but Demos, penalised twelve pounds for a comfortable win on that occasion, looks better. Carmel Arch reads well with 6.13, but 1 the other placed horse, Royal Chef, ■ never seems to get closer up than 'third. Demos and Carmel Arch should again leave the others behind. Arrowfield heads the list in the Bafgownie Hack, but his mission will be the Empire Handicap, leaving Ba'yberry to do duty for the Fordell jtable. Cadet is allowed one pound 'or^the head difference between thmn sn.Thursday, but Bayberry is an improving sort and should again linish In! front of the Taranaki horse. Ben Bolt is the best of the others. The Grandstand Steeples will produce a very nice field of ten, and another good race should be the result. Coalition meets Master Strowan and Bore respectively on eleven and ten pounds worse terms, and this should bring them together if the first day's form was correct. The only others that may be considered are Poltho£U& and Arlington, both of which ran. well the first day, the former making no mistake in annexing the L ■ Hack Steeples, but this afternoon i Bore, Coalition and Master Strowan > should again fill the places, yet proI bably in a different order. \. The Rata Hack Hurdles follow, and ;' this should produce a field of double- - ffigure dimensions. Omahu's win haa

been assessed by the weight adjuster at seventeen pounds extra, so it may l;e advisable to look elsewhere for one better than Omahu, and this might be Lochella, a faulty juiv.p spoiling the latter's chances the first day. This afternoon Lochella may prove to be better than Omahu.

Five only have made the f*cceptance in the May Hurdles, the only new blood introduced being the local Zola. Euripos has gone up a stone for his Century Hurdles' victory, but he won them so convincingly that h-2 may do the trick again to-day. Botii Yankee Jack and Whiro will be suited by the shorter distance, yet never theless Euripos and Zola should share the honours to-day.

Marqueteur was sent home yesterday morning,'so he did not accept in the Empire' Handicap. Rewi Poto should improve on the first day's running, a remark which applies similarly to Risingham and Tressida. New blood in Tiranga and Arrowfieid is in the field, and the latter as the selected of Tilley's stable must be considered. Risingham may' prove to be better than Tiranga and Rewi Poto.

The Farewell Handicap will serve to again introduce Astinonie, the easiest of winners on Thursday, and Post Haste, and also newcomers in Flying Gowrie, Seasprite and Ruddy. Astinome won with the greatest of case on the first day so that one must stand by her again over Post Haste and Flying Gowrie.
