BRITAIN'S FOOD MINISTRY.
SUCCESSFUL OPERATIONS
LONDON. May 6. In the House of Commons, on the vote of £1,451,700 for salaries for tho Ministry of Food, the Hon. G. H. Roberts (Food Controller) claimed that rationing and the distribution of food had been successful. The Ministry's trading in 1917 and 1918 had shown a net profit of £132.000 on a turnover of £67,000,000. Control liad effectively steadied the rising; of food prices, which were lower in Britain than elsewhere. The first year of the war they rose three p^r cent, monthly. Rince the armistice they had decreased four per cent, per month. Tt was voin to hope for grent further decreases, because r>eac? would involve opening the world's markets, and subjecting Britain to world prices for imported articles. The Government during the war time handled 85 ncr cent, of Britain's food at fixed nrices of 95 per cent for foodstuffs, only exceptiir: luxuries. Tbe Ministry would cease its operations in November.
