"WIRELESS MERIT" BADGE,
The committee on badges, awards, r.nd scout requirements of nataonak headquarters, has just established a "Wireiess Merit" badge which no rfoitbt will become quite popular tor P.oy Scouts to perfect themselves in the details. The requirements are as follows: — (1) Be able to receive and send cortectly not less than 10 words a minute. (2) Know the correct form for sending a message. 73) Be able to tell in own words the principle laws regarding radio communication. (4) Know at least 10 of the radiocram abbreviations (Q Signals). " (5) Be able to name two types o* detectors in ihe order of their sensitiveness. . (6) Draw a diagram of a simple transmitting set, showing hotf the rol.'cwing instruments are connected: Source of power (dynamo or storage lattery) transformer, condenser, spark gaps, helix, key, and explain their function. , (7) Draw a simple diagram snowing how to connect the following instruments : Tuning coil or loose coupler,' condensers, fixed or variable, detector, ■phones and ground. Tell the use of {•.bove apparatus. (8) Draw a diagram of three different types of aerials'and tell their advantage or faults. (9) Know how to properly ground a radio, set and know what precautions to . take during a thunderstorm.
(1) Demonstrate how to rescue a i erson in contact with a live wire, and have a knowledge of the method of resuscitation of a person insensible from shock.
(11) Write a brief essay on the development of wireless telegraphy. As a demonstration in connection with the above is expected- to take plage at the headquarters of the Wangahui East Troop on Saturday afternoon next, District Commander E. 13. Owen extends a very hearty invitation to all Scout officers and boys interested to come along and learn something useful.
