BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Wanganui Borough Councjl met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr C. E. Mackay), a«d Crs. Donaldson, Green, Sharpe, Thompson, Burnett, Spriggens, WHJiams, Gower, Lif+iton, Richardson, Luxford, and Aitken. MILKSUPPLY. A special committee reported : — At the request of the committee, the director, Colonei Young, of Wellington, visited Wanganui for the purpose i-x conferring with it, on the matter oi inspecting dairies and testing the herds supplying milk to the town. The Director stated that he was in accord with this committee in its endeavours to ensure a satisfactory milk supply for the town, and tihat the Depatrment would do all it could m furthering .any suitable scheme. *Ie did not advise the adoption of the system recently introduced, in Wellington, that of establishing a-clearing house., in which case the risk of infecting tha whole supply by any one dairy was a danger that could not be overcome. In his opinion the best and cheapest way was to try and encourage the suppliers to cater for a clean and efficient supply for the town (the authorities cannot compel the farmers to send the milk to the town), and the Department always endeavours to assist to bring about this condition of affairs. The local inspector visits the dairies on an average of three times a jear for the purpose of inspecting the htock, sheds and appliances and the conditions in the district. The names of all suppliers are handed to the Borough Inspector, so that the source of all the milk to the town can be ascertained by the Borough officials. Jr the Council took over the control ot dairies it would lose the services of the officers who have been traijjed to tfw requirements and who have the necessary experience to deal effectively witn inspection-and testing ot stock. If the authorities want a higher grade of supply, then the cost of 6txch must of necessity be an increased charge to tiio consumer. 'Dim could be done by the Council owing to it's own dairy farm, the management and mnning of which would be subject to labour difficulties and conditions, a venture he did not recommend. ; • ' Cr. C. H. Burnett said he hoped the matter would be g^no on with. Xt, was desirable to get 'a report on the milk passing through, the proprietary cJearing houses. The Mayor said the "report was only a preliminary &tage. The report was received. . TREE PLANTING. • , j Mr J. H. B6rnet, representing Wai- | totara County Council, asked that the Borough should join with the County Council in a scheme to plant the river bank opposite Upokongaro with > trees, the lower portion ot ' the area being inside the Boroug'a boundary. _ / The proposal revived favourable consideration and it ti'as decided to get the Borough enginer % submit a report. It was also resolved to get tha Borough gardener (Mr Thacker) to advise the County Council on the planting of their portion of the area. TENDERS.
