THE ANTARCTIC.

ANOTHER EXPEDITION

PROPOSED,

LONDON, May 4

John L. Cope, who accompanied tho 1914-17 Antarctic expedition, is leaving England in June, 1920. He was sur. geon biologist to the Ross Sea party, and was a member of the party left on the great ice barrier for the purpose of laying depots after the Aurora broke from her moorings. Cope has chartered' the famous ship Terra Nova. He expects to be absent six years, maintaining wireless communication. The chief objects of the expedition are to ascertain the position and extent of tho mineralogical and other economically valuable deposits known to exist with a view to their development as a source of national wealth; to obtain further evidence as to the distribution and migration of whales, with a view to furnishing a British industry. It is intended to investigate trie meteorological and magnetic conditions of the Ross Sea area, and Cape Enderby Island in connection with their influence on Austra. lasia and South Africa respectively. That such results will be of great value has already been proved by the Argentine station, and also the South Orkneys and the Commonweatlh station at Macqtiarie Island. The expedition takes an aeroplane to facilitate the survey of the interior of the continent. Cope even contemplates a flight to the South Pole.
