SOLDIER SETTLERS.
THE RJSNT QUESTION
WELLINGTON, May 5. The Minister of Lands states that ne has given definite instructions to nave certain matters brought before the Land Board at its next meeting to deal with the questions raised by the Jiopane soldier setters. lie had submitted to him a statement showing the position of these settlers, which gave him the greatest satisfaction. Regarding the suggestion that the Government should capitalise the rent of the first year or two instead of demanding payment at once, the Minister says Land Boards have power 10 posipone the first, second and third years' rent in cases . wnere ciroutn'atances demand postponement. At the end of this period there are three courses that may be tauen: (1) The postponed rent may be spread over a period of from two to live years and repaid in instalments; (2) it may be capitalised and added to the capital value of the land on which rent is assessed; (3j in extreme cases, it may have be be remitted altogether.
