FOR OUR SUFFERING ALLIES.

To-morrow (Wednesday), xinder the auspices of the N.Z. Branch of the Roy il Horticultural Society, a local eifort will be made, on behalf of the Million Fund that is being raised in order to restore the orchards, fruit farms, and nursery gardens which provide the daily bread of the people in the regions of Northern France, Belgium, Poland, Serbia and Roumania, which have been completely devastated by the Central Powers. This work of reconstruction has been truthfully described as a debt of honour fron» British people everywhere, who, under the good Providence of God, have beea preserved from the horrors of invasion This immunity and the ultimate triumph of our armies are, i'fc is true, largojiy due tc the silent pressure, offensive land defensive, exercised by the British Navy, which enabled us to prepare, undisturbed, for over four years, the arms, j the ship*, tlio munitions, the guns which ;}«.ave put ih in the position in whit-h !we are today. But we must never forge* that the time and the opportunity for this work of preparation were largely purchased by the glorious cour'ege of the French armies, the daumjlcss tenacity of Belgium, the heroic efforts of Serbia, tho gallant co-opera-jtion of Roumania, and the awful suff-:r----1 ings of the peoplo of Poland. /The peasantry of all these nations have not only given their lives in defence of the common cause, but they have seen their homes invaded, their villages and thoir means of subsistence wiped out by the Germans with ourposeful vindictiveness. j Their sacrifices, as peoples, there I fore been incomparably greater than 'ours ,and they hay* been made in the i some sacred cause —that liberty, justice and humanity might prevail and good faith be kept between nations. To onÜblo the people of Wanganui to make some small recognition of their indebtedness to the."* snftering peoples, » street stall sale of flowers, sweets, produce, and tobacco is to be held on Wednesday, in stalls located outside Messrs. George and Kerseys. Generous contributors have assured a large and varied supply of these saleable commodities, and it only remains for the purchasing public to make the effort as successful as it deserves to be.
