CORRESPONDENCE.

CAPTAIN HOLM IN REPLY

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—A self-styled "Old Salt" asks, in your issue of to-day, if I am " the Mr Holm who toid the Chamber of Commerce that Admiral Hall-Thompson did not know what he was talking about.'' In reply, I beg to state that I am not the person who made that remark, and had I heard any other member of the Chamber make the statement, I would have warmly resented an unfair attack upon such a oanable and courteous officer aa Captain Hall-Thompson. What I did say was that it was impossible, under normal conditions, for mines sown off Cape Farewell to drift ashore at or near Wangantii, or this side of Rangitikei. TJhe experiment made with floats by the Naval authorities proved this theory, and resulted in the embargo beine lifted from the Wanganui ro-adstead. If your correspondent has any information to nrovo that mines drifted from Cape Farewell, to the beach at Egmont, Opunake, and the Wanganui Bight, h© should immediately communicate with the # Naval authorities. Ho might also enlighten them as to the particular parts of New Zealnnd whefts the mines washed up which were sown at Gaho Island. As a sailor, I wish to protest against your correspondent claiming to be on "old salt." His actions betray him. The ethics of the sea do not permit a person to attack another under cover of anonymity .—Yours, etc., S. HOLM. 24/4/19.
