THE MARTON MAYORALTY.
By the unopposed election of Mr. W. C. Kensington, 1.5.0., to the Mayoral chair, Marton escapes from the [rculiarly unenviable situation in which, for a long time past, it has been placed' in regard to its municipal affairs. For many months the administrative work of the borough has been cr.rried on by a Council at variance with its chief, a condition of* affairs unpleasant alike for the Mayor, the Councillors, and the burgesses, and certainly cot calculated to promote efficiency or facilitate progressive development. Some months ago, when the disagreement between'the retiring Mayor (Mr. F. C Wilson) and his Councillors assumed proportions whioh promised toculminate "n a civic crisis, the " Chronicle" suggested that an endeavour should be made to secure the services of Mr. Kensington, believing that >f that gentleman could be induced to accept office,, the resumption of harmonious and efficient administration would be assured. No good purpose could nov be served by seeking to apportion tb> responsibility for the regrettable friction now happily ended by Mr. Wilson's voluntary retirement and the election in liis stead of a gentleman who is in every way eminently qualified to carry out the duties and shotil- <?©!" the responsibilities appertaining 10 the office. With Mr. Kensington in the Mayoral chair, and- with the promise which, tbe nominations give of a strong and capable Council being elected to work with him, the citizens cf Marton should be able to loo£ forward with confidence to a period of civic peace and prosperity, a period which we hope will be marked by many evidences of substantial progress and energetic development.
