NEW HOSPITAL FOR RAETIHI
THE MINISTER'S DECISION.
(From our own correspondent.)
RAETIHI, April 23
As hinted in my communication to your journal when chronicling the visit of Dr Watt, the District Health Officer to this district some time ago in connection with health- matters in general, and our district hospital in particular, the choice of site has fallen on Raetihi. The Hon. G. W. Russell has sent a letter to the Waimar--ino County Council as follows: "I have pleasure in informing you that after going fully into the reports submitted by my departmental officers, and considering the aspects of the case, I consider the four-acre site in Raetihi will be the most suitable for the establishment of the proposed hospial."
The site referred to in the Minis^j ter's letter is one of several inspected by Dr Watt, and is in a commanding situation overlooking the town. It is an ideal one for the purpose. Mr Haydon is at present the owner of the property.
With regard to the hospital itself, from enquiries made it is learnt that it will be a six bed hospital, with a maternity ward of three beds. The hospital will of course be subsidiary to Wanganui.- Cases not suitable for tieatment here will probably be sent to the Taihape Hospital, which will soon have a resident surgeon. In the eveht of cases arising which cannot be conveniently treated at either of these institutions, Wanganui Hospital will be theij* destination.
There is a feeling of satisfaction that the question of site has been settled, and the consummation of the wishes of those who have laboured so generously in the past will, it is hoped, soon be achieved.
