ELECTRIC SHIPS AND BRITISH PIONEERS.
As the "New Mexico" is the first large battleship fitted on this system, it is generally assumed that the application of electricity to the driving of ships is an American invention. The pioneer work was, however, done by" British engineers,, notably Captain Durtnatl and the late Mr. Mayor, and the first patents for this system were taken out by them. It is to the credit of the American naval authorities tha* they were the first to try the system. They built a ]arge collier with electric, diive and tested it along with a sistership fitted in the ordinary -way. As a result of these tests, plans were made for much more ambitious equipment on the Dreadnought "New Mexico." Great Britain has, however, to her credit net only the initiation of this revolution but also the building of an early electrically propelled merchant vessel, the "Wansty Castle.-"
