THE FARM.

The Grain and Produce; market .is.still tending towards further weakness in grain, and if the Southland oats harvest can be gathered in anything like favourable weather, the resu.'t must tx? a low range of values throughout the year, which will proportionately decrease the demand for other grain.

Merchants have been very disappointed with the 'quantity of grass seed required this year, bu^ it is probable that the decided brealt in the weather has come-in time to allow a larger area to be ploughed' for grass. Cocksfoot is very plentiful this year and much lower prices are quoted.

It is pretty certain that evejy acre of 'grazing, land-and every blade of grass will be required this winter to carry the extra stock which the shortage of freezing space has left on the hands of farmera, and the man with an acreage of turnip land wiil probably have no diificu't in finding a use for it. For these reasons it is to; be hoped that the winter will not be a severe one, although several degrees of frost have already been reported this week.

The improved Hunters wheat distributed by Lincoln College three or four years ago has been responsible for some phenomenal yields this season. At the College itself the best yield was 71 bushels pet acre, but 89 bushels were obtained by Mri F. Schaffer, on Murray's Estate, Lincoln, between 88 and 90 by Mr. J. Lowne, Lincpn, aria about 90 btishels by the Surinyside Mental Hospital. Of course, all these returns were off good land, but the jjieldinsc capacity of the CJpllege strain is sufficiently proved. The other pure strains distributed by the College, namely, Solid Straw Tuscan, Purple Straw Tuscan, and True Pearl, have also given most satisfactory results, only one instance being recorded where | the College strain has yielded less than the fatmer/s.own seed. , '■ "A ■■■ '■■■ ■ '- •:■■.• ■'/■.■ ■■ .1
