ACADEMY PRESIDENT'S
RESIGNATION
It Mas announced at a general assembly of Academicians recently held that Sir Edward John Pointer, ±Jt.,U.C.V. 0., P.R.A., had resigned the presidentship of the lloyal Academy. The, resignation was accepted with regret. Sir Edward Poynter, who was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1869 and Royal Academician seven years later, ha s been president since 1896, when he was knighted. A baronetcy was,conferred in 1902. As a youth he uork^l in Leigh ton's etudio, and, after studying in English art schools, went to Pans, where ho joined George chi Mauner. After hi fl return to England he took part in the revival of wood engraving; li c was engaged on the designs for the restoration of Wa-ltham Abbey, and assisted Leighton in the decorations of South Kensington Museum. H? was Sl.odo Professor of Art at University College. London, from 1871-1375, principal of th o National Art Training School, South Kenisngton. til IP.SI, and director of the National Galtoy from 1894 to 1905. For more than 50 years h ( > has exhibited at the Royal Acadamy. and his works adorn the walls of galleries in every quarter of the globe. An etcher, a sculptor, a defeigner. ,':, water-colour painter, a mural decorator, a worker in stained glass and mosaics, as w*>ll as an artist m black find white. Sir Edward may be nptly described as an "all round" r.itist.
