AN APPRECIATION.

A POPULAR POSTMISTRESS.

(By a Correspondent.)>

Changes in the Civil Service are many, and when they, occur, often cause regret when, the official is popular in a district. Such was the case when it became known that Mrs Mountier, the popular postmistress at Waitotara had had notice of promotion to tke Adelaide Road Post Office, Wellington.

We in the back blocks, althougn glad to hear of Mrs. Mountier's wellearned advancement, could not let her depart without expressing our sorrow over her departure, and in some way showing her that we appreciated the thorough way she had carried out her duties, and at the same time did what she could, especially in the case of sickness, to overcome much of the red tape attached to the telephone department.

A presentation was arranged, and would have taken place but for the influenza epidemic. This upset everything, so a substantial cheque was raised and sent with a letter regretting the turn things had taken. Mrs Mountier was then herself taken ill, and on recovery was kept at Waitotara up to the present time. Hearing that she is to leave Waitotara thi s week, I pen the above lines assuring her that we all think that her place will be hard to fill. We are grateful for many past favours, and so wish her the best of good luck in her new surroundings.
