In Committee on the Statute Law Amendment Bill, on" the motion of Sir Francis Bell, Clause 19, relating * o the suspension of awards to facilitate the employment of disabled soldiers, was struck out, and a new clause wa» added, providing for detention in police stations of persons sentenced to imprisonment for less than seven days, or, where there is no police gaol or prison, the detention in* a police sta-' won for not more than seven days of persons awaiting trial. Otherwise the clauses were passed and progress was reported on the Bill.1;

The Council decided to adhere to the amendments made in the Expeditionary Forces Amendment Bill, and appointed Sir Francis Bell and the Hons. Carson, Moore and Barr managers to meet the House of Representatives. A motion of appreciation of the late Hpn Beehan was passed, ajid-the Council adjourned for the afternoon in token of respect.
