The Wanganui East Branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union held its monthly meeting on Friday, Aug. 31, when the Anglican Schoolroom was filled by the members and thm£' friends- Mrs. Dusfield presided. I he. secretary read her monthly report of activities,, and also correspondence from the Premier (the Hon. W. F. Massey) in acknowledgment of the receipt of a copy of the resolution passed at the recent meeting of Mrs LeeLowie re the six o'clock closing movement. The Premier stated that legislation would be brought down in the House, during the present session, dealing with the liquor question. Sixteen new members were initiated and 19 new names added to the cradleroll.

The members briefly discussed a paper by Miss A. ■Morrison on "The Fitness of Women for the Franchise," read by Mrs. Duxfield.

The meeting took the special form of a social and gift afternoon. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the union members, and songs were jendered most acceptably by Mrs. Bowater, " Homeland" and "Hoard in the Twilight"; Mrs. Dowsett, "He Wipes the Tear"; and Miss Elsie Andrew. ''Queen <tf Afe gels." But the special feature of ibm gathering was the receiving of gifts to be forwarded to ;Mrs. Nimmo, of Wei- ~ lington, for the mine-sweepers. The following articles were donated : 29 pairs socks, 2 balaclavas, 2 chest protectors, 4 scarves, 2 pairs gloves, 1 pair mitts, 3 smgiets, 1 pair underpants, and £1 6s. 6d. m donations." As the time for receiving donations has been extended to the end of September, the secretary will be pleased to receive further parcels from those who have not yet help-ed in this worthy object. .- i It is expected that Miss Cruickshank, M.A., M.Sc., Principal of the Girls' College, will address the next monthly meeting, so a good attendance is requested-. .
