-YlAiiiOiN, Aug. 31. The Marist Bros.' iootball ;team, of Wangaiiui, are trying conclusions with tli 0 l< eliding Thirds co-morrow- (Saturday.) The game will be played on- the Feilding racecourse. As the Thirds' won the B Grade competition this year, a- good game is expected. The Feildmg team will comprise C. Shore, A. Dyke, T. Fitzgerald, N. Larsen, D. Spenee, V. Hopping, H. Murdock, D. Jiedpath, 1. Bramwell, C. Weir,' F. kpooner, W. Manning, J. Spooner, G. Spooner and F. Haybittle. § Private J. S. Smith, an ex-member of the Marton Post Office, has been wounded in the right eye and is now in hospital.

■ The" many friends of Constable Squires, .of Marton, will regret to learn that he is at present suffering, from rheumatic fever. Constable Sweeney also had the misfortune to fall off his bike, and sustain a slight injury to his az-rn.^ Constable Mahoney, of Wanganui, is relieving for a few days. Miss Sutton, who has proved a.most efficient and popmar member of the Marton Borough Council clerical .staff, leaves for her home at Wellington tomorrow (Saturday.) Her departure will' be regretted by a large circle of friends.

The Salvation Army Fund at Marton has reached £36 7s. Bd.

The children 'atending the Makiri-kii-i school celebrated Arbour Day by planting .about'a hundred trees, after which, they were entertained to afternoon tea at Mr A. Stuart's residence. Prizes donated by Mr Stuart, for an essay on "Why avo Plant Trees," w»re aAvarded as follows : —Standard VI.: Chrissie Lynch, 1; Allie Goodall, 2; Standard V.: Norman Bertram, 1; Allan McKay, 2; Standard 111.: Nellie Goodall, 1; Jean Stuart, 2. A social and dance Avere held at the Marton Druids' Hall last night, under the auspices of the Post and Telegraph Club, and it proved a very enjoyable function indeed. Messrs Piercy and A. Blair officiated.as M.C.'s, Avhile the music was supplied by Mr..A. E. Oozier. During the evening Mr B. P. Lethbrdige (chairman of the Rangitikei Patriotic Society) presented Sergt. Beard and Private G. Argo, who Avere on final leave, Avith wristlet Avatches. Sergt. Beard suitably responded. Supper was provided by the ladies. The secretarial duties Avere carried out by Misses Gronn and V. Campbell. At the Marton School Committee meeting the headmaster regretfully reported that the school attendance" had fallen below what Avas required to entitle the school to its present staff. The primary school average stood at 259.1, out of 276.8, and the secondary school at 285.3 out of 304.3. The question of supplying school stationery Avas discussed, and Mr Higham w ras authorised to buy £5 wrorth as a trial order. It was contended that this Avould not affect the local stationers, and it was hoped that the object of reducing the cost of education would, be attained.
