The Post ?nd Telegraph Conference passed the folloAving resolutions:—li the opinion of this Conference-the classification jscales affecting public «»r----vnn^s under the Commissioner's control, are in v;igent need of radical alteration, because they do not allow any person to receive o recognised living wage until years after such a wiigo AA'ould be paid in other walks of life; as practically all Post and Ttle^raph emoloyees serve approximately wo years as a telegraph messenger, they should, on promotion to higher duties, be placed in a position to be able 10 pay for their, foo.l and clothing, ond thereafter make such pi ogress as will keep their earnings in line with workers "in outside occupations requiring special skilled knoAvledge. » This Conference is; of opinion that the. time has aiTived when the remuneration of public servants and other Avage and salary Avorkers should'be arranged so as to automatically synchronise with the spending power of the sovereign, based on the index number prepared quarterly by the Government Statistician.
