(From Captain Malcolm Ross, Speciat War Correspondent with the New Zealand Forces.)

August 7th

Brigadier-General P. E. Johnston was killed this morning in the front line, near Warneton, by a sniper's'bullet, death being instantaneous. He had lately been in command of the Infantry Reserve Group in England, and had only been a few days back in France. Only yesterday he attended a conference at Divisional Headquarters, and to his old friends had expressed his delight at getting back to the front again. He was a very brave soldier, and scorned danger. He has been killed on the morning of the second anniversary of his former brigade's attack on Chunuk Bair. on which occasion he fearlessly exposed himself when launching the assault. _ His family is one that has not spared itself in this war. four of his brothers, one of whom was killed, having enlisted. The funeral takes nlaco to-morrow in the cemetery where Brigadier-General Brown was buried.
