OUR CRIPPLED SOLDIERS.

HELP WANTED FOR A HOSTEL

Preliminary preparations for the drawing of the Crippled Soldiers' Hostel Art Union were begun last week, when the butt 6of the tickets already sold were placed in the large octagonal barrel which has been specially built for the occasion. The size of the barrel would surprise most people. It is 10ft in length by 6ft 6in. in height and width, and is lined inside with glazed paper to ensure a thorough mixing of the tickets whenever the barrel is revolved, which will be frequently before the tickets are drawn. There are eight doors to the barrel through which the tickets are deposited, and through which they will be drawn. The drawing from beginning to end is under the supervision of the Mayor of Wellington, the Inspector of Police, and the managers of the Wellington banks. Thus, when the work of loading the barrel with ticket butts is finished for the time being, the doors of the barrel are sealed by the bankers, and the seal must be broken only by the bankers when further tickets are to be deposited in the barrel. The last day for the sale of tickets by agents is the 28th of this month. The drawing takes place on the 6th of next month. Hence the time is getting short in which to apply for tickets. It isth c duty of every person in the Dominion to help the 'object for which the art union has been promoted, namely, the establishment of a hostel in Wellington, handy to tho wharves and railway stations, for crippled soldiers and sailors who have bo home of their own. or who have no friends with whom they can live in comfort after being maimed in the war. The art union tickets are a modest sixpence each, affording an opportunity for all to help.
