IS LONDON WICKED?
From time to time the cry is raiseo that London is full of crime. There is, of course, some truth in this. But moralists -seem to forget that crime lurks in the underworld of every great centre where men congregate in millions, and that, compared with other capitals, London can show a very fair record. Let us compare tn» records for oiic year of London, New York, an 3 Chicago. Investigations were recently made by the chairman of the Special Council Committee in Chicago, and they showed that, as against 36 murders in London, New York had 131, and Chicago 262. In robberies, including assults with the intention of robbing, Chicago also came off worst. There were 1022, to New York's 962, and London's 78. But the annual burglaries p^int a black finger to New York. These are the ivespective figures:—Ne~ York, 1755; * London, 1129; Chicago, 1041. So, judging from tl.ase statistics, London is not quite as black as it is painted.
