SPORTING.

NOTES BY "MULTIFORM."

On Friday last the track work at Riccarton was not exceptionally interesting, although some good gallops were accomplished.

Master Strowan, looking bright and well, was given half-pace work over two circuits on the sand, He moved very freely and looked in splendid trim. St. Eimn and Golden Glade were also given half-pace work. St. Elmn appeared to be a little cramped in his action, bub Golden Glade went well. Both are booked to visit Australia shortly.

Black Ada, who won a race at the last New Zealand Cup meeting, is down i'or the Grand National fixture. She looks bright and muscular and is putting plenty of dash into her work.

Bon Reve did not show any signs of lameness when he walked on to the track yesterday, and nothing moved more freely than he did while covering two rounds oi: the sand, at close to three-quarter pace. Sleight of Hand has had more iodine painted on his near hind fetlock. He does not go at all sore when working, and he certainly looks an improving horse.

I^eonta got over a couple of circuits on the sand in a taking manner, and did not show the slightest sign of soreness either before or after working. Tip Up, who looks the picture of health, was kept at very steady pacing on the tan. This horse is in perfect racing condition.

Te Onga was on the course on Thursday, and did steady pacing. He appears to be brighter and better than twelve months ago. The annual football match between the jockeys of the North and South Islands is creating considerable interest -■his year It will be played in one ot the paddocks close to the Riccarton racecourse.

Golden Glade hit his stifle while being schooled over the hurdles last TuesSSk tS d ° £ aV ot done a great deal 3\r+?: He fre 1u 7 en% inures himself m this way, and the trouble prevents him from being given a solid preparation. The steeplechaser Merry Lad has not done much work while he has been at Riccarton, but h e bears a well-trained appearance. He was second in the Grand JNational Steeplechase last year, and his knowledge of the fences should serve turn well in next week's cross-country engagement.

Johnny Walker holds his place as one or the most fancied candidates for the Winter Cup, He looks well, and is a resolute galloper 3 but his track form since h e has been at Riccarton suggests that he may be seriously troubled by the solid pace in the early stages of the race.

The Hawke's Bay trainer, V. Collelo, who is at present, on a visit to Riccarton with his steeplechaser, Braeburn vnll leave for Sydney shortly in charge of the 4-year-o]d mare Tressida, with a view to fulfilling engagements at the April meeting of the Australian Jockey Club.
