HOCKEY.

SATURDAY'S MATCHES.

The principal interest in the hockey matches on Saturday centred in the meeting of the two leading teams, Hinemoa and Phoenix, the former winning by 2 goals to nil.

The game was fast and at times strenuous, but It was a very open contest and Phoenix were unlucky in not scoring on at least a couple of occasions.

Phoenix were the ,first to attack when the game opened, but Hinemoa had a bit the best of affairs from thence on. The opening score came from Mclntyre's stick, after a fine solo effort. The second score had an element of luck. From a free hit at the half-way line, Spnrdle sent th.^, ball up the right wing to Darby who centred nicely, and Stone got his shot in, the ball being helped through by the goal-keeper.

On one occasion Phoenix went near scoring, a shot by Douglas striking the top of the goal. On another occasion Martis of Hinemoa. who played a very sound defensive game throughout, stopped a score by running a long way baclc to the circle.

The second half was very even on the whole, but there was no further score. Phoenix got into scoring position on several occasions, but the ball went everywhere except into the goal. Hinemoa tried hard to score, but the defence of Sutherland in goal was very sound.

Mr. R. Saunders was referee

P. and T. defeated Kia Toa by 4 goals to 2 after an interesting game. Mr. Fisher was referee.
