SLEDGE-HAMMER BLOW ON 12 MILES FRONT.
HAS HINDENBURG'S PLAN BEEN FRUSTRATED?
. LONDON, April 9. Mr Gibbs continues: The attack covers a 12-mile front south of Givenchy and Engohfclle, and is a sledge-hammer Tbio'w, threatening to break the northern end of Hindenburg'sefcne, which is threatened at St Quentin. As soon as the enemy was forced to retreat east of Bapaume and Peronne he hurried up divisions and guns northwards to counter 'our attack there, meanwhile preparing a new line of defence to the southward. , He hoped to escape thero before our new attack was ready, but we have been too quick, and his plans have been frustrated. Thus another titanc conflict, upon which almost evertyhing depends, commenced to-day.
