CONFUSION IN THE NAMES.

AUCKLAND, April 14. One of the most striking examples of the confusion that is associated ■with, the multiplicity of local bodies in Auckland and which will require rectification as the greater Auckland scheme is carried into effect is to be found in the frequent repetition in nomenclature. Instances of the careless and happy-go-lucky system of naming Auckland streets is amazing. The extent to which confusion must often be caused by these repetitdons in the work of postal officials, cab and express drivers and others may be imagined by anyone who takes the trouble to glance through the list of streets given in the directory. The list of streets in what may be termed the "Greater Auckland area" snows that there are upwards of 100 cases, of names which are used more than once in the naming of "streets," "roads," "avenues," "Terraces," "Crescents," etc. There are no fewer than 60-cases in which these names are used twice and over 30 instances in which they occur three times. "Ar^yle," "Eden," "Gladstone" and "Salisbury" are used four times. "Albert," "Prospect," "Russell" and "*Selwyn" five times. "Richmond" and "Victoria" appear in six cases whilst. "Domain" is to be found seven times, and "King" or "King's" eight times. In some cases the names of streets owing to duplication have been changed by the suburban local bodies, but in a number of such cases the new name chosen has been one which is alreeady in use in another district. In many cases the duplications occur in contiguous districts which, of course tends to make ""confusion worse confounded."
