NURSES AND MIDWIVES.

In replying to a question by.Mr. R. W. Smith (Waimarino) to-day, the Hon. R. H. Rhodes (Minis:j'>r k*" Pubho Health) said there is no intention to amend the law this session with regard to the conduct of nursing homes. It is admitted that the regulations may inflict hardship on some nurses who have had special experience, but who did not avail themselves of the several opportunities given them to be registered under the Midwives Act. There is nothing to prevent nurses who have not registered from -acting as nurses providing they do not undertake maternity work without the assistance of a doctor. It would be in the highest degreo a retrograde step to allow nurses who aro not thoroughly qualified to attend midwifery cases on their own responsibility. There is now an ample supply of qualified midwives for the country, and in. those districts where quwbiied mid-wives are- not obtainable tho Department is not enforcing the Act.
