DUNEDIN WOOL SALE.

(Pir Prer.s Association.)

DUNEDIN, December 15

The first wool sale of the season was held to-day, when 4.722 bales were offered. There was a large attendance cf buyers, representing British, Continental, and American firms as well as New Zealand buyers. The shortage in quantity offered was due to the wet weather causing delay in shearing. Competition was* very keen, to buyers' limits, for lifrht conditioned clips, the demand coming principally from Continental buyers, who were responsible for prices^ being a fraction too high for the Yorkshire milb. Tho following shows the range of .prices : —Merino, medium to good, lOd. *.o 10id.; inferior, 7£d. to 9£d.; half-bred .super, ll£d. to 12.U1. ; medium to good, lOd. to lid.;, inferior, f3d. ifr '9id.; cross-bred super, lOd. to 10£-d.; mediiuxj. to good, B|d. to 93d.; inferior, 7£d. to Sd.; prices super 9^d- to lid.; medium to good, 7d. to Bid.; inferior, sd. to Gd. ; locks, 3d. to 42d.

Compared with last year, merinos are about on a par, except inferior, -whicli was id. lower. Super half-bred land super cross-bred showed a drop of 2d. to 3d. This was due almost entirely to tho absence of American demand and the removal of the American tariff, enabling operators to take lower quality \vools. Good to medium crossbred and holfbrcd declined Id. to lid., and inferior Id. to ljd. The demand for pieces generally was very slack.
