DOG CAUSES SENSATION.

WELL-KNOWN GOLFERS INJURED.

A party of well-known golfing enthusiasts, who are taking part in the golf championship being held at Wianganui. , were the victims of a serious accident which befol them in the Avenue yesterday anorning, and which was directly due to the dangerous practice of allowing dogs to wander uncontrolled about the streets. Messrs Arthur Duncan, the ex-New Zealand golf champion; Arthur Gillies (Bawera), Harold Thomson (Inglewood). Gonville Saunders (Wanganui), and Garter, the driver, were motoring up the Avenue, and when opposite Messrs Purser's a, dog ran in front of the car. The driver swerved to avoid th© dog, andone .of,the front wheels side-slipped and collapsed, tffe spoke breaking and the tyre Bursting. The fearful jar caused the car to capsize, and the horrified spectators rushed to assist.

Messrs Saujncters. Gillies and Duncan, who were in the hack seat, were most miraculously thrown clear of tho vehicle and escaped with a bit of a shaking and the loss of la little skin. Not co, however, the occupants of the front seat, oth Mr Thomson and the driver were thrown face downwards on the asphalt with a sickening thud, and when willing hands ran to the rescue it was found that the driver was right underneath the car, while the body of the car wias 'resting on Mr Thomson. The latter revived when picked up and carried into Mr Purser's shop, but the driver was unconscious when Dr Barle. who had been speedily summoned, arrived arid attended to him in Mr Doig's pharmacy. Mr Carter, however, soon came to, and an examination revealed a nasty wound on the side of the head and an ugly black eye, though fortunately no bones were broken.

Mr- Thomson was also much cut aibout the head and was suffering from an injured arm, though it was believed no ■bones we/re brokem.

The car Wias badly damaged. In hi« play-off in the semdi-final with Mr. A. H. Lewis yesterday after the accident, Mr Duncan lost.
