A CHAIRMAN'S TRAVELLING EXPENSES.
AUDITOR DEMANDS REFUND. (Per Press Association.) FEILDING, August 1. At the Oroua County Council meeting to-day the chairman, Mr. Hugh Burrell, laid on the table a letter received from the Auditor-General. The letter pointed out that the balancesheet showed that £35 travelling allowance had been paid to the chairman m lieu of the actual travelling expenses provided by the Act. The letter further said. "This being the oase my duty is to call upon you to lefund amount ■of such allowance, and I shall bo glad to consider any reasons you may wish to submit'why I should uot take action aocordingty.'" Mr. Burrell said that when he received the letter ho sent a cheque immediately. He looked upon the letter as an insult. . The-^ matter raised a storm in tho Council, the opinion being expressed that the chairman was quite entitled to receive the sum, and should not have returned the cheque. Tt was decided to ask Mr. Guthrie, M.P., to inquire into the position.
